About Eurobrom

From its early days, Photography went through numerous printmaking techniques, several of them contributing to major changes in photographic styles. However, in a market focusing on immediate profitability, barely compatible with imaging techniques where skilfulness and materials are coming between reality and mind, most of those processes were given up, and replaced by silverprints first, and digital images later on.

Today, there appears to be a renaissance of these historic processes. Several organizations (see our « links » page) are proposing to their members a rediscovery of techniques corresponding to their artistic sensitivity, allowing them to share their experiences and to develop synergies through joint projects.
The popularity of the Internet was another tool to improve communication, and bring those artists closer together.

The International Society of Bromoilists, a group of photographers on the Internet with both an interest and experience in the bromoil process, was created back in 1999. It rapidly appeared however that if online discussion groups are wonderful to share techniques, assist beginners and to post works for other artists to see, nothing can really replace live demonstrations and personal contacts.

"Hopperfest" meetings, with lots of technical "how to" programmes, print showings, evening dinner get-togethers, photo tours, etc... were organized in the USA with great success.
It became rapidly clear however that overseas attendance would always be relatively modest and that the participation in such activities depends strongly on the place where they are organized.

This is the reason why we decided to develop local bromoil activities here in Europe, to tighten relations between European bromoilists and their national organizations, and to encourage cooperation between these organizations.
A first international meeting of bromoilists was organized in September 2004 in Amsterdam, into which several photographers from 9 different countries did participate.

The meeting was quite successful, and the participants agreed unanimously on having such a gathering every other year:   Eurobrom   was born..
